The Ukrainian city Shostka of Sumy region, located on the border with the Bryansk region of the Russian Federation, more often appears in the reports of emergency incidents of environmental contamination as a result of industrial accidents. This is due to the presence of a number of specialized companies for the disposal of toxic chemicals, spent rocket fuel and explosive ordnance. The quality of their work is not only in Ukraine.
The last six months has around the history with discharge to the open pit near Shostka large number of pesticide and over 100 tons of waste rocket fuel. Then there was a leak deadly dangerous toxic heptyl, which may be some time in the atmosphere. From acute intoxication affected the local residents and the government literally did not know what to do. Silent disaster did not happen, and to examine its consequences are connected not only Ukrainian, but also international environmental experts from the world wildlife Fund. The ecologists from the Russian Federation special caution caused a close to the inflammation in Ukraine Russian protected areas nature reserve of Federal significance “Bryansk forest”, which is under the patronage of UNESCO.
“This neighborhood Bryansk region with Shostka – is cause for concern,” says living in the Bryansk region, the expert on ecology and environment Alexander Mudrov, which monitors environmental changes in the Russian-Ukrainian border.
The results of the scientist’s researches indicate the possibility of the spread of toxic substances from the territory of Sumy region in Russia.
At the end of 2015, Ukrainian media reported about the criminal prosecution of those responsible for the spill of heptyl, a toxic substance utility based for public money by releasing on the road and a city dump. Among them there was not a single official.
And that’s environmental safety in the Ukrainian region are seriously interested in the United States. In December last year to oversee the process of disposal of aircraft missiles and large-caliber artillery shells, Shostka called for American diplomats and experts, including the Deputy Director of the Bureau on the reduction and nonproliferation of weapons of the U.S. Department of state Steven Costner. As a result, they were surprised by the fact that in Ukraine in General can be such dangerous work, requiring the employment of qualified personnel and technology.
During the visit, the guests from the USA noted that to take out the ammo still is not – they need to be disposed of on site in accordance with the NATO program. Financial assistance from the United States for these purposes should be of the order of 24 million U.S. dollars, and delegates no less concerned about the efficiency of disbursement of royalties to American taxpayers.
The management of Shostka Institute of chemical products authorized to carry out the destruction of munitions, reported to Americans about the work progress according to plan, the technology of dismantling and destruction of the missiles. The scale of this recovery is impressive. According to the head of the Institute Volodymyr Shcherban, Ukraine has more than 1 million tons of such obsolete ammunition, which is getting more dangerous and more dangerous. Meanwhile, earlier Steven Costner had previously expressed concern at the state Department, declaring about the problem of theft of arms and ammunition stored for disposal at the military depots of Ukraine, their smuggling abroad.

We with partners from world wildlife Fund, in turn, will make efforts to protect the environment. Meantime, the health of our residents and Ukrainian border risk,” said ecologist A. Mudrov.
