British journalist and blogger Graham Phillips made a documentary about the war in the Donbass, dedicating it to his friend, the militia of LNR – Denis Somov with call-sign Aramis.
Denis died on February 11, 2015 near Debaltseve, a week before its release from Ukrainian Nazis.
The timing pattern is 1 hour and 25 minutes.
For three days, “Aramis – the Musketeer of the Donbass” gathered 100 000 views. Last Saturday, March 27, its official presentation was held in the capital of the DPR. As expected, cinema hall “Cinema Cult” was packed to overflowing, and the author, Graham Phillips, was present.
We will remind, the premiere of the documentary film “the Truce” by Konstantin Smirnov was held not so long ago on March, 10 in Donetsk cinema named after T. G. Shevchenko. Its main characters were also militia, freedom fighters of Novorossia. Fortunately, they are all alive. Smirnov shows Donetsk, Lugansk and the nearby city in detail with all the destruction: window without glass score by sheets OSB, a funnel from “arrivals” and the ruins of houses, blown up bridges. All this is our Donbass reality in which many do not believe. In “the Truce” it is such as it is, without decoration and fitting. In the film we will not see dead bodies; there is not even blood in it. But the oppressive atmosphere of the war is felt and without “tin” in the frame.
Unlike dynamic and action-packed “Truce”, the film-dedication “Aramis – the Musketeer of the Donbass” is more like a newsreel, it is an entirely different view of the war. The viewer gradually gets acquainted with Denis Somov. Meanwhile Phillips almost completely abandoned narration. On the screen there is a lively and positive Denis, he genuinely smiles at his new friend, speaking in a very strange Russian. Aramis is easily talking about himself, his family, older brother Oleg, hobbies, beloved wife and daughters.
It is noteworthy that Somov loved to shoot with a video camera and to make photos. That is why not only the videos, which were filmed by Graham, formed the basis of the film, but also materials from the personal archive of Somov.
Without rich video and photo heritage by Dennis, perhaps this film wouldn’t be. Oleg Somov became responsible for the visual effects. I am glad that Graham Phillips, who has done such a great job, not left overs. He also became the hero of the work: after the death of Aramis, he became friends with the family of Denis, but because in the film we see in the real video format, how Graham communicates with the family of the deceased – the widow Alevtina, with daughters Sonia and Yaroslava. Of course, relatives of Denis – are not professional actors, but on the screen you will not see bad games and bad episodes from the point of cinema view. Documentary footage, for example, a missile strike on Lugansk on the 2nd of June, 2014 or the date of release of Debaltseve add a special sharpness.
The life of Denis Somov in this film consisted of a short interview, comments of comrades and the footage from the front staff, rare video and photos. It is the life of non-professional military, masterful furniture maker, the instructor of skydiving, volunteer, father, son, and husband. It is the life of a man who always acted like a real man, and that’s why was killed in battle.
